Ilizarov Deformity Correction: Precision Orthopedics for Bone Realignment
What is Ilizarov Technique?
The Ilizarov technique is an advanced orthopedic procedure used to correct bone deformities, treat complex fractures, and lengthen or reshape bones. Named after the Russian orthopedic surgeon Dr. Gavriil Ilizarov, this method uses a specialized external circular frame to guide bone growth and healing through gradual mechanical adjustments.
At Dr. Bones Ortho, we use the Ilizarov method to restore function, correct misalignments, and transform lives—especially in cases where traditional surgeries are not effective.
Conditions Treated with Ilizarov Technique
The Ilizarov method is highly versatile and is used to treat:
Congenital or developmental bone deformities
Shortened limbs (limb length discrepancy)
Non-healing or infected fractures (non-unions)
Bone defects due to trauma or tumor removal
Malunions – fractures that healed in incorrect positions
Post-traumatic deformities
Joint contractures and stiffness
How the Ilizarov Method Works
The procedure involves attaching a circular external fixator to the affected limb using pins and wires. Over time, the frame is adjusted to:
Gradually realign the bone
Stretch soft tissues and muscles alongside
Stimulate new bone growth in the gap created
This process is known as “distraction osteogenesis” – safely and slowly separating the bone ends so new tissue naturally fills the space.
Benefits of Ilizarov Deformity Correction
✅ Minimally invasive with fewer complications
✅ Effective for complex, neglected, or infected cases
✅ Preserves limb instead of amputation in extreme deformities
✅ Supports early mobility during treatment
✅ Excellent success rate for limb lengthening and realignment
What to Expect During Treatment
Initial Evaluation: X-rays and CT scans are used to plan the treatment.
Surgery: The external frame is applied in a sterile setting.
Adjustment Phase: Gradual daily adjustments made as per your doctor’s schedule.
Monitoring: Regular follow-up visits to track bone regeneration and frame alignment.
Removal: Once correction and healing are achieved, the frame is removed.
Recovery and Rehabilitation
You will be guided through a customized physiotherapy program to strengthen muscles and regain joint flexibility.
Occupational therapy and gait training are provided to help with walking and daily activities.
Most patients are able to return to normal life and physical function after treatment.
